Modern day garage door safety sensors are usually led and if the sensors are aligned correctly with the two beams connecting they should light up green.

If you have a laser level you can use it instead of a string to align your garage door.
These sensors are designed to protect children from unnecessary harm and are usually positioned about 6 to 8 inches in front of the vertical tracks that the garage door moves up and down on.

In other words something is probably blocking the beam.
